Membership

Welcome to Israel Congregation. The heart of Judaism in Southern Vermont!

Israel Congregation is an independent, transdenominational, egalitarian congregation that offers a full range of Jewish programming. Our mission is to help our members come closer to Judaism—its culture, teachings, and ritual. We have great pride in our warm and welcoming community; we embrace diversity and strive to create an inclusive environment. We value the participation of our members and encourage them to become involved. We cherish our heritage and are dedicated to ensuring the well-being of the Jewish people and we actively support the Jewish principle of Tikun Olam.

Our congregation has a full-time spiritual leader, a vibrant religious school, and a challenging array of adult educational offerings. Each Friday evening our community comes together at 6:00 pm to welcome Shabbat. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic (and hopefully in the near future again), we began our Shabbat observance with a congenial little nosh or "pre-neg" at 5:30 pm setting the tone of the evening. Our "pre-neg" was followed by our spirited evening services, kiddish and  a potluck Shabbat dinner to which all are invited. We sincerely hope we can once again engage fully in person, but until such time, we are holding services in person AND via zoom.

Shabbat continues with Torah Study on Saturday morning beginning at 9:00 am. All are welcome in person or via zoom. We observe all major holidays and festivals in the Jewish calendar. Please refer to the Calendar page of our website for more information for in-person gatherings and/or links to participate.

We are committed to the ideal that everyone who would like to be a member of our congregation should have that opportunity. Our reasonable dues structure supports this philosophy. If you feel that your means do not permit you to pay full dues; please speak with either our Treasurer, Carmel Furtado or our President, Neal Wolkoff. No one will be turned away due to an inability to pay for full membership, we are happy to provide assistance as needed.

Our members exhibit a contagious level of enthusiasm, participation, and caring. We hope that you will choose to become a contributing part of this wonderful community, ensuring that Judaism continues to thrive in Southern Vermont. On behalf of the Board of Directors of Israel Congregation, thank you for your interest in our congregation.

We look forward to the opportunity of greeting you.

L’Shalom,

Neal Wolkoff

President
